THE PROJECT
A road and track handlebar, designed and made to meet the equipment rules for the LA 2028 Olympic Games. Design by Will Seitz. Production by 64Cycles. Status: in development.
THE BAR
- Carbon fibre (CFRP) construction.
- Aero top section.
- Flare at the maximum the rules allow, and width at the minimum the rules allow.
- Wrist clearance is a priority.
- Interchangeable track grips, with integrated bar end plugs and an integrated grip surface for track use.
- Swappable 3D printed inserts for the tops and the drops, so aero shapes can be tested and changed.
- Long hood section that encourages an aero tuck in the hoods.
- Hand cutout on the tops for Madison racing.
THE STEM
- CNC machined 7075 aluminium.
- Reach adjustable from 80 to 180 mm.
- Fits both integrated and non-integrated headsets.
- Stack height adjustable in 5 mm steps, in the style of a time trial riser.
- Possible mounting on non-round steerer tubes, such as the Argon 18 design.
THE RULES WE DESIGN TO
- Under the 2027 UCI track rules, a bar must be at least 350 mm wide at the outermost point of the drops, and hold that width over at least the bottom two-thirds of the drop height. This rules out extreme flare.
- The rules define a set of bounding boxes for the stem, the tops, and the drops, with maximum and minimum section sizes. The areas between those boxes are not regulated.
- Up to two elements are allowed in a section, and each one must meet the size limits on its own.
- Prototype equipment cannot be authorised for track events or record attempts. The bar has to be on sale to the public.
- A new technical innovation goes to the UCI Equipment Unit, which responds within six months of a complete application.
- Our working notes put the 2028 price cap at 1,500 euros.
